RurAL CAP supports Alaska’s aging population by providing volunteer opportunities for people age 55 and older. Leveraging AmeriCorps Senior funding, RurAL CAP is the Alaska sponsor for two national programs: Foster Grandparent Program and the Senior Companion Program. People age 55 and older can apply to volunteer with one of our programs. Volunteer opportunities include: tutoing youth in schools, serving as a culture bearer in schools, or providing support to other seniors in your community.
RurAL CAP’s Elder Mentor Program, nationally known as the AmeriCorps Senior Foster Grandparent Program, serves children in pre-K and school settings throughout the state of Alaska. Elder Mentors are individuals age 55 and older with low incomes who support school readiness and improvement of academic engagement among children with special needs. Eligible Elders receive training, support, and a small stipend for their service.
Our Elder Mentor volunteers connect with children living with disabilities and/or economic challenges at public schools, Head Starts, and early learning centers. Volunteers help children prepare for a successful school career that results in graduation, ultimately equipping them to achieve additional positive outcomes such as employment with a living wage, a healthy lifestyle, and a stable living situation.
AmeriCorps Seniors Pledge:
I will get things done for America – to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier. When faced with a pressing challenge, I will bring Americans of all generations together to strengthen our communities. When faced with children at risk, I will help them stay in school and on track for a brighter future. When faced with older adults in need, I will provide support and compassion so they may age with grace and dignity. Working for the greatest good, I will use my lifetime of experiences to improve my country, my community, and myself through service. I am an AmeriCorps Seniors Volunteer, and I will get things done.
